Nordic cities' innovative resilience initiatives

Demographic changes in the Nordic Region are keeping pace with the global unprecedented urbanization trends of the 21st century (State of Nordic Region 2016).  Such demographic changes are compounded by increasing climate change impacts, resource scarcity and population growth and challenge Nordic cities' and regions' resilience and sustainability efforts. The Nordic Built Cities Challenge responded to the needs of the region by contributing to the development and scaling up of innovative solutions for livable, smart, resilient and sustainable cities.

The Nordic Built Cities Challenge is an initiative pioneered by Nordic Innovation, an institution under the Nordic Council of Ministers working to promote cross-border trade and innovation. The Challenge consisted of six local competitions, in which six Nordic cities were looking for innovative and multidisciplinary solutions to urban challenges connected to a specific urban space. Experts in technological innovation, urban planning and architecture, transportation, housing, energy, and beyond participated in the Challenge. In July 2016, six finalists were announced and invited to the Nordic Built Cities Challenge Awards where prizes were awarded for the first, second, and third place.

This session will introduce the audience to this successful Nordic cooperation initiative and showcase three of the six winning projects, featuring inspiring and innovative approaches to resilience and sustainability-building from the Municipality of Runavík, Faroe Islands; City of Malmö, Sweden; and City of Copenhagen, Denmark.

About Nordic Innovation: Nordic Innovation is an institution under the Nordic Council of Ministers working to promote cross-border trade and innovation. Nordic Built Cities Awards: Nordic Innovation invited the finalists from the six local competitions to register for the Nordic Built Cities Challenge Awards (the NBCCA), where Nordic prizes of 1.200.000 NOK in total would be awarded. The finalist solutions competing for the prestigious NBCCA would also receive plenty of attention and be showcased in the Nordic region and beyond.
