Insuring Resilient and Sustainable Cities Summit - Insuring Resilient and Sustainable Cities

Session Description

In December 2016, ICLEI and UN Environment's Principles for Sustainable Insurance (PSI) Initiative joined forces to create the largest collaboration between the insurance industry and cities. This year, ICLEI and the PSI hosted the first-ever Insuring Resilient and Sustainable Cities Summit during the Resilient Cities 2017 Congress from 4-6 May in Bonn, Germany.

The Summit was introduced in the Opening Plenary of the congress (4 May) and comprised of four deep-dive sessions (C5, D5, E5, F5) on May 5th 2017 discussing how the insurance industry — as risk managers, risk carriers (insurers) and investors — can work together with cities:

C4 PANEL: Closing the disaster risk reduction gap: Understanding and reducing risk in cities

D5 PANEL: Closing the insurance protection gap: Insuring cities

E5 PANEL: Closing the financing gap: Investing in cities

F5 PANEL: Shaping a resilient and sustainable urban future: The insurance industry and cities agenda going forward

Invited speakers include: Munich RE, AXA, Allianz, Finance Norway, Risk Management Solutions, Aviva Investors, InsuResilience Initiative, ILO, Permanent Mission of Fiji to the UN, GIZ, Ramboll, City of Oslo, Norway, City of Iloilo, Philippines, City of Copenhagen, Denmark, City of Bangkok.

The Summit has the following aims:

  • To explain the key roles of the insurance industry and cities in sustainable development;
  • To understand key resilience and sustainability challenges and opportunities for cities;
  • To show insurance industry solutions and innovative partnerships between the industry and cities that build resilience and promote sustainability;
  • To highlight opportunities to drive the sustainable and resilient cities agenda around the world.

An outcome document will ensue the Summit to capture all relevant lessons learned.

The outcomes of this summit will inform the future work of the ICLEI-PSI collaboration, as well as other key events throughout the year, such as the 2017 UNISDR Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction from 22-26 May in Cancun, Mexico and the 2017 UN Climate Change Conference from 6-17 November in Bonn, Germany (COP 23).
